My Mate Dick
$45.00
This was one of the later books by Ion Idriess, that prolific recorder of life in Australia far from the big cities. It relates the experiences when he and his mate Dick explored the Cape York Peninsula in the years immediately before WWI. They were youngsters prospecting for gold in a wilderness region that was isolated, largely unexplored, sparsely settled, with the Aboriginal people sometimes hostile to European intruders, This is Idriess at his best, recalling their adventures, the dangers and the excitement, as well as the values of that iconic Aussie tradition of “mateship.”
