Mike Parr: the Self Portrait Project

Mike Parr’s Self Portrait Project dominated his work from 1982 throughout the eighties, and still persists in the early nineties. In ten years almost one thousand self-portraits have been produced in different media. As a project it is as considerable as the performance art which characterised his work during the seventies. This text will offer an interpretation of the Self Portrait Project, mainly from a psychoanalytic standpoint, suggesting themes and motifs which appear to be crucial to Parr’s artistic process.
