The stories in this collection can stand comparison with the best of Russian literature. Like many of his contemporaries, Pilnyak was condemned by the brilliance and independence of his early work to a lingering literary death in the thirties and eventual physical death under Stalin’s purges, charged with Totskyism and spying for Japan.
