The Arcades Project

The Arcades Project is Walter Benjamin’s massive, unfinished masterpiece about the birth of modern consumer culture in 19th-century Paris. Written between 1927 and 1940, the book uses the glass-roofed iron shopping arcades of Paris as a metaphor for the capitalist “dreamworld” that still shapes modern society. Instead of a traditional narrative, the book is an immense montage of thousands of historical quotes, reflections, and notes organized into themed sections (called “convolutes”). Kevin McLaughlin & Howard Eiland (translators).
