The Cave and the Spring: Essays on Poetry

A collection of reflections on the art of poetry by the author. The book follows two main themes. Firstly, the nature of poetry in general and of some general misconceptions about this. Secondly, the inexhaustible variety of the poet’s art studied in a number of examples chosen from the English poets. This second edition adds further studies, on Browning and Henryson, to the latter set of topics, and one on the way poets use language to the former.
