Women’s Gathering and Hunting: In the Pitjantjatjara Homelands

Since the time of the Tjukurrpa, hunting and gathering has linked Anangu (Pitjantjatjara Aboriginal people) to the land in a unique way. As with many aspects of life, women in Anangu society perform certain food-gathering and hunting tasks and men perform others. This separateness of men’s and women’s functions is balanced by a strong sense of co-operation. This booklet examines traditional food categories, Anangu seasons, the division of labour, food preparation and the material culture used for hunting and gathering. Descriptions of bush foods and their habitats are included as well as an index of Pitjantjatjara food names.
