The author was, as a young man, a sailor in a fleet of ships assigned with the task of opening up the harbors of Japan to any and all ships of the Western nations. Greey later returned to Japan, and ended up living there for a number of years, falling in love with the country and its ways and its people. This novel was his method to try and offer Japan in the best light possible.

Book Condition: Very good hardcover for age with old water markings and edge wear to boards, spine and some page edges. Internally the pages are well preserved with edge wear and staining to page edges but remain fixed to the spine. There are 171 illustrations, with the cover designed and drawn by the author. Tissue cover to cover page illustration is intact. Original owner’s inscription dated 1882 inside.
